Easier or Unnecessary

Wouldn’t you agree that easier or unnecessary are two great words to compliment or describe the word WORK?

I know I do.

If I had the choice of choosing between the words difficult versus easier, or complicated versus easier, I’m choosing easier every time.  And it is not because I am lazy or don’t like difficulties.  I am just fond of easier if it gives me freedom.  Freedom of what you ask.  Freedom of my mind, my peace, and my precious time.  Easier goes with freedom.  So it’s not easier because its less difficult but easier because you have a strategy.  Thus it’s easier NOT easy.

Likewise, if you had the choice of choosing the measures “unnecessary” or “essential,” I’d dare to say you’d probably prefer the essential being maximized in your life and not the unnecessary.  I know if you could wave your wand, you would make your life simple yet productive.

Speaking of the word essential, I admonish anyone who desires to have things easier and more impactful to read and apply the principles of the book, The One Thing.

If you chase two rabbits, you will NOT catch either one. – Russian Proverb

The One Thing by Gary Keller and Jay Papasan pointedly offers the most simplistic solution to one’s problem of getting the desired results.  The authors suggest that you focus on your “One Thing.”  That is paying attention to the BIG PICTURE while making small things a primary focus.  Success is geometric,  according to Gary and Jay.  They relate it to the domino effect.  They say the One Thing makes you think LARGE and work through a list that is prioritized to achieve the domino effect.  Essentially, when you hammer away at the One Thing it starts your domino run.  The deliberate minimalized effort is gaining maximum reward.  An example of this is the profound Pareto’s Principle or 80/20 rule.

The book offers a directed probe to help you hone your time while thriving in realistic and achievable outcomes.

The Focusing Question is:

How would adding the three P’s to your life change it?

Keller and Papasan impels the reader to apply this “One Thing” ideal to any area of life and without reservation the outcome will have amazingly positive rewards.  They share what I call the P3 ideology: Purpose, Priority and Productivity.

  1. Purpose – Our purpose sets our priority and our priority determines the productivity our actions produce.
  2. Priority – Priority is what we place the greatest importance on.  When we prioritize and focus on the RIGHT thing and put energy into it, everything after that falls into harmony.
  3. Productivity – Productivity is not about activity, it is about priority, planning and time protection.  Productive action transforms lives.

Gary Keller, the founder of Keller Williams Realty has been hugely successful by taking his own advice and approaching life by focusing daily on The One Thing.  This tiny life hack has afforded him extraordinary success. If Gary Keller used the concept of one thing to “connect his results with his approach” when he was at what appeared to be the end of his rope, you can too.  How did it start? Gary sought a coach (p.7) and his coach opened his eyes to the possibilities that “so few could change so much.” (p. 8) They put Pareto’s Principles into play.  And it ignited.

Keller Williams Realty has grown from one office to becoming an Inc 500 company with almost 1,000 offices worldwide.  Jeff Kauflin, in the Forbes Magazine article The Happiest Companies to Work for In 2018 positioned Keller Williams as the top company.  In 2020, in order to handle the Keller Williams Realty’s portfolio of companies, the holding company KWx was founded.  That One Thing decision that Gary Keller made is still rippling its way through more and more dominoes of his technology and real estate company.

Here’s some helpful advice from the book to begin your journey to your One Thing:

  • Be committed
  • Find supportive environment
  • Accept responsibility
  • Embrace chaos
  • Block out your time
  • Have no regrets

Finally, anticipate a few failures. Take a deep breath on that one, it’s okay – you will survive! When you use this LIFE HACK you will come out dominating in your PURPOSE, doing the PRIORITY in your life and being very PRODUCTIVE because your One Thing gave you momentum in many areas of your life.

We’d love to hear how you are achieving your one thing. Thanks in advance for sharing your comments.
